My Heart Breaks Daily

Black and white photo of woman standing alone in empty room with big windows. She is standing in a dress, in shadow, looking solemn.

How can you look at the atrocities of the world and deny them?

How can you look at the heartache and turn your back?

Actually, I know how, because I did it, too.

It felt too heavy, terrifying and overwhelming so I looked away.

It felt like too much responsibility so I looked away.

It felt like it didn’t affect me so I looked away.

I was wrong, though.

Yes, looking breaks you, but it also opens you.

It requires action and healing.

It requires you.

All of you.

And looking connects you.

It connects you to yourself and others.

To powerful change and hope.

To all of life.

Yes, there is heartache when you choose to look, but there are also tangible heartfelt moments.

Others feeling loved by your actions and telling you so.

Beginning to recognize your power and capacity to live fully.

Working to heal your own heart and helping to heal the world.

Heartbreak, though uncomfortable, is a form of love.

Heartbreak means I see you and I care.

If I look away, I stay safe, but I also stay numb and separate.

And not just from you and the world, but from myself, too.

So, please, don’t look away.

Your heart might break, but we need you.

Your heart might break, but you’re not alone.

Your heart might break, but it might also mend in the process of breaking.

Take my hand.

Let’s look together.
